Adi (Aashada) Shukravaru Puje
In the Solar calendar, from around the 15th of July (Dakshinayana Punyakala or Shnkaramana) for a duration of
approximately 30 days, it is the month of Adi. During this month especially on Fridays, Lakshmi is worshipped.
After cleaning the Pooja Gruha, an idol of Lakshmi is kept, and worshipped with Turmeric, Kumkum, Flowers,
Dhoopa, Deepa and Naivedya. Laskmi Sahasranamam or Ashtotharam is chanted along with Sristuti and various
Lakshmi songs. Many prepare Thambittu and light lamps in that for Lakshmi Aarthi (Mav Valak).
Recipe for Thambit is as follows: You may make this using any measure depending on the size of the valak you
want to make.
Mix 5 parts of rice flour,
2 ½ parts Jaggery powder,
2 ½ parts Coconut shred,
cardamom,
saffron to taste, with 2 parts of Ghee.
Add little milk or coconut water only if needed to bind the dough
(please add in drops. If you add too much the dough will become watery very easily).
Aarthi is done by singing the famous Bhaagyaada Laksmi Baramma.
Use Ghee to light the lamps.
Typically Mav Valak is not lit on the 3rd Friday.
May Goddess Lakshmi bestow her blessings on all.
PS. During this month on the day Pubba Nakshatra comes, it is celebrated as Andal’s birthday – Thiruvadipporam.
On that day some people prepare Mav Valak also and offer Sakkare Pongal as Naivedyam.
